Abstract

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has recently been considered an additional endogenous gasotransmitter and within the central nervous system, H2S is predominantly produced by the enzyme cystathionine-²-synthase (CBS). CBS-produced H2S may regulate the cardiorespiratory system and modulates peripheral chemoreceptor sensory afferents that project to the nucleus tractus solitarus (NTS), as well as the ventilatory response to a brief hypoxic challenge. The H2S augments synaptic transmission between visceral afferents and second-order neurons via mechanisms at the presynaptic terminal, including enhancement in intracellular calcium, rather than altering postsynaptic properties. However, no information exists in regards to the effect of endogenous H2S in NTS on respiratory control in rats. Therefore, in the present study we will evaluate the effects of central microinjections (NTS) of H2S donor [sodium sulphide (Na2S)] and inhibitor (AOAA) on respiratory muscle activity. (AU)
