Abstract

Currently the use of Raman spectroscopy as a technique for optical biopsy is well established. Several studies using the technique as a method for ex vivo analysis and also with cell cultures show a high discriminative power of the technique in comparison between normal and malignant tissues, as well as potentially precancerous lesions and inflammatory processes. Studies ex vivo involving the use of the technique with pathological processes of oral mucosa are among the most discussed, particularly with relevant results. The fact that the oral environment has easily accessible, this technique allows for future in vivo experiments. The aim of this work is the use of Raman spectroscopy for in vivo study and diagnosis of oral disease processes, indeed the spectra obtained in real time and non invasive can provide important information of the biochemical changes that are occurring at that particular pathological process. We also aim to further establish the clinical application of the technique aiding the pathologist in the diagnostic process and optimizing the surgical procedure for professional involved. (AU)
