Abstract

Introduction: Most countries are going through a process of demographic transition, resulting in an increase of their elderly population. European countries experienced economic development before population aging. On the other hand, Brazil's elderly population growth happened within a low income environment. The elderly are more vulnerable to chronic diseases but also accidents such as falls, which are among the main external mortality causes for this age group. Besides, persistent consequences may result from these situations, such as fractures, social inactivity and functional decline. The identification of São Paulo's social determinants of falls and functional mobility may bring valuable information on risk factors identification and on preventive strategies planning. Objective: To analyze São Paulo's social determinants of functional mobility and falls on a representative sample of its elderly population. Methods: I will use the results obtained from the Estudo Saúde Bem Estar e Envelhecimento (SABE), a study coordinated by the Pan American Health Organization that aimed to define the life condition profile of elder population living on urban centers of seven countries in Latin American and the Caribbean. This study will analyze the results from the elderly population of São Paulo, using a longitudinal design with data from 2006 and 2010. The dependent variables of interest are the functional mobility and falls happening between 2006 and 2010. (AU)
