Influence of aceleration setting reaction by ultrasound, halogen light and light emitted diode on properties and bond strength of glass ionomer cement

Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of acceleration in the setting reaction of high viscous glass ionomer cements (GIChv) by ultrasound, halogen light and Light Emitted Diode (LED) in flexural strength, surface roughness bond strength and interaction dentin-GIC by scanning electron microscope and confocal laser scanning microscopy. For all analyzes, the specimens will be divided into nine groups according to the GIC used: GIChv - powder -liquid (Fuji IX GP Gold Label -GC Corp.), GIChv - encapsulated (Fuji IX GP - GC Corp.), and regarding the acceleration of setting reaction - CG (control group); UG (application of ultrasound for 15 sec); HG (irradiated with halogen light for 60 sec); LG (irradiated with LED for 60 sec) and a control group of resin modified glass ionomer cement (GICrm) encapsulated (Fuji II LC - GC Corp). For flexural strength test, 20 specimens shall be prepared with 25x2x2mm for each of the nine experimental groups. They will be stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 h. Then, the specimens will be subjected to endurance test of three-point bending speed 1mm/min. For the analysis of surface roughness, 10 specimens of each experimental condition, previously made for the flexural strength test will be selected. Six readings, three on the X-axis and three on the Y axis, will be performed with roughness in Ra scale. Readings average will be considered as roughness of the specimen. For the bond strength to dentin test will be selected 90 primary molars (n = 10). Polyethylene cannulae will be placed on pretreated dentin flat surfaces filled by one of the GIC. Then one of the previously mentioned accelerators will be applied. After storage in distilled water for 24 h at 37°C, the specimens will be submitted to microshear test (0.5 mm/min). The pattern of fracture will be held in stereomicroscope (400X). To evaluate the GIC - dentin interaction, blocks will be made of approximately 6 mm thickness of each material on exposed dentine of 27 primary canines (n=3). The specimens will be stored for 48 h at 37°C and 100% relative humidity. Then they will be sectioned perpendicular to the adhesive interface, resulting in beams with 0.8 mm2. Five specimens of each tooth will be fractured near GIC- dentin interface by three-point bending to then be observed by scanning electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy in order to qualitatively assess possible structural differences. For all analyzes, if data shows normal distribution, analysis of variance and Tukey's test will be performed. If distribution is non-normal, the Kruskal-Wallis test will be used (±=5%). (AU)
