Abstract

Sugarcane is a crop of major social, economic and environmental importance for Brazil. The increasing demand by ethanol for the national flex fuel cars and the attractive sugar prices in the international market caused the crop to expand steadily over the last decade, reaching to new areas with different soil and climate conditions where the climatic risks are challenging for viable economic production. On the one hand, irrigation becomes the most suitable management for the establishment and maintenance of crop, on the other crop's response to different soil and climatic conditions and management is still uncertain. In this sense, the use of dynamic crop models, on biophysical process-based, becomes a tool to support decision making and planning the crop in Brazil. To reduce the uncertainty of this type of model simulations, the literature suggests the use of at least three models together (multi-model approach). There are only two sugarcane models available to users - DSSAT/CANEGRO and APSIM-Sugar. This project aims to develop, calibrate and evaluate a new dynamic crop model for sugarcane, based on a structure previously described for use in Brazil, focusing on water management in the cane fields. A field experiment will be conducted in Piracicaba for getting focused data on new algorithms generation and improve the modeling process in soil water balance and crop evapotranspiration and ratoon growth. Literature data will be used to include the effect of increasing concentration of atmospheric CO2 and soil mulch cover on crop growth and development in the model. A set of experimental data collected in different regions of Brazil with the same cultivar grown in Piracicaba will be used for calibration and evaluation in different conditions, allowing to consistently describing the abilities and limitations of the new model as well as the associated errors with this new tool simulation.
