Abstract

The epidemiologic transition observed in Brazil in recent decades has led to a swift increase in the number of elderly individuals and their causes of morbidity and mortality. Currently, chronic diseases, particularly cardiovascular diseases, are responsible for the majority of deaths and hospitalizations in the country. Objective: To perform a longitudinal analysis of the risk factors for morbidity from cardiovascular diseases (CVD) of the elderly residents of São Paulo, using the three waves (2000, 2006 and 2010) of the Health, Welfare and Aging Study (SABE). Methods: All the elderly individuals who did not have CVD at the first wave (2000) will be included in the analysis. Individual and contextual determinants of morbidity from CVD in the next two waves (2006 and 2010) will be analyzed using multilevel Bayesian models, with individuals as the first level and each of the "subprefeituras" of residence as the second level. The independent variables of interest will be individual factors (sex, age, education, BMI, marital status and presence of comorbidities) and contextual factors (median income and violence rate of the "subprefeitura" of residence). The multilevel methodology will make possible the analysis of the two groups of determinants separately and together, allowing the study to calculate how much of the variability of the presence of CVD can be attributed to individual factors and how much to the characteristics of the place of residence.
