In search of professional identity of undergraduates in Public Health/Collective Health: narratives and reflections of subjects involved

Abstract

In 2012, the undergraduate in Public Health of School of Public Health of University of São Paulo (FSP/USP) comes true in the scenario of Undergraduate in Collective Health. In the mid-70s, the FSP hosted short courses for health workers, who were essential to put on the streets, professionals who played a decisive role in the Brazilian movement for health reform and the construction of SUS. From that time on, the FSP developed the MSc program and a Ph.D. in Public Health - one of the largest in the country. And somewhere along the path, lost touch with the reality of the construction of the SUS and its challenges. The experiences of the Federal University of Acre (UFAC), Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), and other institutions of higher education demonstrate that it is possible to form professionals public health at undergraduation, but the object of this scientific initiation is not to discuss the possibility of undergraduation formation professionals public health, but bring the discussion of professional identity. Nóvoa (1997, p.34) explains that " (...) the identity is not a given, is not a property, is not a product. Identity is a place of struggle and conflict, is a space for building ways of being and living in the profession. "This reference makes clear that identity is a movement from changing the ways to live life: life course, political, social, cultural, or modes of living life. Objectives: I – General: Investigate the different perceptions of undergraduates in public health /collective health on professional identity from the production of narratives health. II – Specific: a) Apprehend the students' perspective on vocational training. b) Apprehend the students' perspective on the labor market. Methodology: This is a qualitative and exploratory research. The present work is divided in three axes, the first axis consists in performing literature search in databases as SciELO, LILACS and Database Coordination of Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) to collect the production of scientific literature about the field of collective health contextualized in the universe of undergraduation courses in collective health with the following descriptors : professional identity, undergraduate, public health, health workers and vocational training. The second part of the work is intended for students, so that they protagonize the empirical study of this work through interviews, seeking to explore issues of interest and that make sense for the undergraduates in public health /collective health, like as trajectory life at university, college activities, labor market, experiences in undergraduate. The last aspect of the research is focused on the construction of professional identity sanitarian from the scientific production of Claude Dubar, French sociologist who studies identity at work. From the perspective of sociology, I present two other authors used in doctoral dissertations that discuss professional identities like Dubar, they are: Zygmunt Bauman, Polish Sociologist studying on the identities in what he calls liquid modernity and Stuart Hall, English sociologist who studies cultural identities in post modernity interface. To disseminate the results are intended to be organizing a national workshop with representatives of all the courses Collective Health in Brazil to discuss professional identity in the Congress of Rede Unida and ABRASCÃO, both in 2015.
