The scientific initiation project aims to perform an investigation about the urban and architectural heritage of a midsized city in the State of São Paulo, as subsidy for its preservation by caution devices, like the designation as a landmark by councils of Historical Heritage Defense or the preliminary injunction by the Public Ministry. Likewise, the project aims to induce community to value it, considering its importance to strengthen local identity. Thus, it looks for a contribution to the safeguard of this urban and architectural heritage, through a detailed data collection. Therefore, this identification inventory will recognize the 1940s' buildings - or set of them - that still remain in the beginning core of Presidente Prudente city, São Paulo. This decade of economic boom reflected in many buildings in the central area of the city; however, even with the current process of redefinition of local centrality and with these areas' deterioration, a lot of those buildings still remain as a material register of that period. So, this research will function as reference and continuity to other ones that focus on preservation, restoration and adequacy to the new needs concerning uses and spatial appropriation in the present city. The proposed study continuous the previous work developed on Vila Goulart (Process FAPESP 2012/ 02382-5; 2011/ 196221-0 e 2011/ 19622-6) and comes up with the identification of the urban and architectural heritage of 1940 decade on Vila Marcondes, the settlement located on the other side of railway and of the original nucleus of the city, containing about 600 properties. The present study will cover a half of them (300 properties). (AU)
