Abstract

The beef cattle industry is of great economic importance to Brazil, however, despite the prominent position of national livestock in the economic scenario, it is characterized by low productivity and a large variation in the quality of meat produced, which compromises competitiveness of this market sector. The genetic improvement has been considered an important factor to increase this competitiveness and the molecular analyses of the genome of domestic animals begin to help solve some of the limitations of classical breeding methods. The development of high density panels of SNPs made it possible to find markers near to the causal mutations and statistical methods for genome wide analyzes allowed to search for QTLs along all the genome. However, the large quantity of available markers for association studies makes the power of each statistical test very small, then only genes with very important effects on traits can be identified in the small samples. Therefore, the aim of this study is to identify polymorphisms with significant effect on meat tenderness in Nellore cattle with subsequent sequencing of the identified regions and search for casual mutation.
