The aim of this study is to evaluate the photodynamic effect of curcumin (CUR) encapsulated in polymeric nanoparticles (NP) on multispecies biofilms of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Candida albicans. CUR-NP will be synthesized using poly-lactic acid (PLA), and dextran sulfate (DEX). To characterize this solution, the physicochemical properties (size, polydispersity and zeta potential) will be determined. Standard strains of MRSA (ATCC 33591) and C. albicans (ATCC 90028) will be cultivated for the development of multispecies biofilm for 48 hours at 37ºC. Next, the effects of Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) mediated by CUR-NP and blue LED light against biofilm will be assessed by quantification of colonies (CFU/mL), total biomass (crystal violet staining) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Each evaluation will be carried out in triplicate on three separate occasions and compared to free CUR. Data will be statistically analyzed.
