Abstract

The number of buffaloes has been growing worldwide and in Brazil the buffaloes stand out in dairy farming due to profit generated. However, economic losses due to changes in the production and composition of milk, making it less suitable for consumption and processing, are caused by mastitis, an infection of the mammary gland caused by a reaction to metabolic and physiological changes, trauma, or microorganism's invasion. The mammary gland tissue is protected by two types of immune defense mechanisms: innate immunity, also known as the capacity of nonspecific responsiveness, and acquired immunity. In the early stages of infection, which there is a predominance of innate immunity, the mammary gland recognizes the invading pathogens and initiates the response by releasing or activating different effector molecules and mediators of defense among which stand out the antimicrobial peptides and specialized chemical mediators. Thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate the gene expression level of lactoferrin, transferrin, B-defensins and interleukin in buffaloes with mastitis, from the RNA extraction from somatic cells of milk of these animals. For this, samples of milk from animals diagnosed with mastitis and animals free of infection will be collected to RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis and validation of expression profiling by qRT-PCR technique. The study of the expression of these genes related to active immune system in mammary gland can become an important tool for the development of strategies aimed at preserving the health of the udder.
