Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of the association between the professional application of TiF4 varnish (one application) and the at-home application of a solution containing TiF4/NaF (daily application) against dentin erosion in vitro. For that, 108 bovine root dentin samples will be polished and protected in 2/3 of the surface using nail varnish. They will be distributed into 6 experimental groups (n=18/group): Group 1 - control (no treatment); Group 2 - rinse solution containing TiF4/NaF (500 ppm F-, pH 4.4); Group 3 - NaF varnish (24500 ppm F-, pH 5.0); Group 4 - TiF4 varnish (24500 ppm F-, pH 1.2); Group 5 - TiF4 varnish + group 2; Group 6 - NaF varnish + group 2. The samples belong to the varnishes` groups will be treated once for 6h, before the pH-cycling. After 6h, the varnishes will be removed. The samples belong to the fluoride solution will be treated daily for 7 days (2x1min/day), after the first and the last erosive challenges. The erosive challenges will be done 4x90s/day, using 0.1% citric acid solution (pH 2.5). Between the erosive challenges, the samples will be immersed in artificial saliva (remineralization). After 7 days, the dentin loss will be measured using contact profilometry (µm). The data will be statistically analyzed (p<0.05). Three samples from each group will be analyzed by scanning electron microscope in the University of Giessen, under supervision of Nadine Schlueter, who is expert in the preparation of the dentin samples in the critical point for getting images in a cross-sectional view.
