Abstract

The beef cattle industry in Brazil is based on the use of forage as a primary feed source. However seasonal changes reduce the quality and quantity, decreasing animal performance even in the rainy season. Thus, supplementation of the diet on pasture could be an important strategy to improve performance and reducing age of slaughter. The objective of this experiment will be to evaluate the intake, diet digestibility, ruminal fermentation and microbial protein synthesis of growing cannulated cattle supplemented in different grazing intensities during the rainy season. The area will be divided in 18 paddocks of Brachiaria brizantha grazed at 15; 25 and 35 cm in continuous stocking with variable stocking rate. The supplementation strategies will be: multiple supplements in the amount of 0.3% to 0.6% of Body Weight (BW) for the animals in the pasture 15 cm; 0.1% and 0.3% of the BW in the pastures of 25 cm; and mineral mixture and 0.1% of the BW in the pastures of 35 cm. The variables evaluated will be:intake and digestibility of forage and supplement, microbial protein synthesis, dynamic degradation of Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF), nitrogen balance and ruminal diet of animals to each corresponding system. The experimental design used is double incomplete Latin square with twelve cannulated animals, six treatments and four experimental periods in the rainy season. When significant, the means between treatments will be compared using Tukey. Significance will be declared at P<0.05. (AU)
