Abstract

As observed for the human population, the longevity of companion animals has been increasing. Therefore, it is of growing interest to enlarge knowledge about the effects of senescence on metabolic responses in dogs. Among these effects, there is insulin resistance, characterized by increased concentration of insulin required to maintain plasma glucose levels, which might be related to reduction in quality and length of life in this species. The use of diets containing resistant starch in different species promoted reduction of insulin level required to maintain physiological glucose, reducing the occurrence of insulin resistance. Yet there are no studies indicating if resistant starch in the diet is capable of reducing insulin resistance in older dogs. Resistant starch is characterized by the sum of starch and starch degradation products that are not digested and absorbed in the small intestine, being fermented in the large intestine. Thereby, the aim of this research project is to evaluate insulin and glucose postprandial response, nutrient digestibility and production of intestinal fermentation products generated by the consumption of extruded food with low or high resistant starch level in elderly and adult dogs. Sixteen Beagle dogs, including eight adult dogs (aged 2 to 6 years) and eight elderly dogs (with a minimum age of 10) will be used. The experiment will follow a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments, with two diets (high and low resistant starch) and two ages (adult and elderly), totaling 4 treatments. It will be conducted in a cross over design and for this, each age group of dogs will be divided into 2 subgroups of 4 animals (part of the crossover), which will randomly receive one of the two experimental diets for 35 days: day 1 to 28 for adaptation to food; day 29 to 34 for total collection of feces for digestibility trial and evaluation of fermentation products; day 35 to assessment of insulin and glucose post-prandial response to food.
