Abstract

The investigation of individuals during their first-episode psychosis (FEP), before the progression and the treatment with antipsychotic medications, is helpful for understanding the complexity of schizophrenia. Considering that schizophrenia is a chronic condition, disease progression and use of antipsychotic medication can confound results on gene expression and DNA methylation. Our main aim of this study is to identify genetic markers using transcriptomic and methylomic approaches in a longitudinal cohort of FEP. The patients will be assessed in the baseline, all antipsychotic naïve (anFEP, N=60) and after eight weeks (FEP-8w, N=60) of antipsychotic treatment, beside, 60 Health controls (HC) will be assessed. The DNA Genotyping array will be performed using the PsychChip array. Transcriptomic and methylomic approaches will be performed using the HumanHT-12 v4 Expression BeadChip (approx. 25,000 genes) and the Infinium HumanMethylation450 BeadChip (approx. 490,000 methylation sites), respectively. With these data, we expect to find potential blood biomarkers for disease (anFEPxHC) and for treatment response (anFEP x FEP-8w). (AU)
