Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in the mandibular arch of patients submitted to rapid maxillary expansion (RME) during mixed dentition period (to be before pubertal growth spurt) and compare them to individuals with normal occlusion development, using measurements of plaster models. Thirty children were followed and divided into two groups: the experimental (n = 15) and control (n = 15). Patients in the experimental group (Ge) underwent to RME MacNamara protocol, while in the control group (Gc) no orthodontic intervention was performed. The results of paired t-test showed that in Ge, with theexception of the arch perimeter, all measurements changes were statistically significant (p <0.05).
