Abstract

Trees, especially eucalyptus, contribute to the majority of the biomass on the planet and there is great economic interest in their potential for the production of wood, energy and cellulose. The structure of these woody organisms is in part favored by the presence of a biopolymer which confers rigidity to plant cells: lignin. This biopolymer makes it difficult to process wood, especially in pulping processes for the production of paper and cellulose. The control of lignin content, mainly by genetic regulation of biosynthesis and deposition of the polymer, is an extensive subject of study by the related community. Therefore, recent researches have given great attention to microRNAs, which are small fragments of RNA capable of pairing complementary to mRNA sequences, inactivating or promoting the degradation of the mRNA molecule, resulting in interference on gene regulation in organisms. With that in mind, this proposal aims at analyzing the regulation by miRNAs of genes coding for important enzymes in the pathway of lignin biosynthesis and deposition in eucalyptus species. The elucidation of important regulatory elements and the possibility of the production represent a great possibility for the manipulation of lignin content and the types of lignin accumulated in eucalyptus and other arboreal plants.
