Abstract In noisy environments, individuals with unilateral hearing loss find more difficulties than their normal hearing to understand speech and locate the sound source. The sound localization is an auditory ability that affects individuals with unilateral hearing loss owing to loss of the benefit of the interaural time, what allows the individual to determine that direction the sound is coming. Thus, the time to locate the sound source is more, impairing speech intelligibility and understanding of the message. The functions of the central auditory nervous system are influenced by processing of the temporal information, that is considered a fundamental skill in auditory perception of verbal and non-verbal sounds, phonemes, duration, pitch discrimination, among others. Within the temporal processing, the temporal resolution and ordering abilities are more studied because the importance in the speech acquisition, correlate with the perception and phonemic discrimination. The temporal ordering is an auditory ability that refers to the perception and processing of two or more auditory stimuli in their order of occurrence in time. The temporal resolution is the ability responsible for detecting the time intervals between the sound stimuli, rapid and abrupt changes or of detect the smallest interval of time necessary for the individual to realize the difference between the sound signals. Aim: To verify the hearing abilities of temporal ordering, temporal resolution and sound localization, before and after the adaptation of the Hearing Aid (HA) in individuals with unilateral hearing loss. Materials and methods: 30 subjects diagnosed with unilateral hearing loss, of all types and degrees, aged 18-60 years of both sexes will be evaluated. The study will be divided into two stages: pre-adaptation and post-adaptation. In the pre-adaptation stage, the individuals will go through an interview, the questionnaires of hearing ability of sound source location and Scale of Auditory Behaviors - SAB, simplified auditory processing evaluation and Random Gap Detection Test - RGDT. Following will be adapted, and will go through the acclimatization period (three months). After this period, the post-adaptation phase will be initiated, in which will be applied the interview, the two questionnaires, simplified auditory processing evaluation and RGDT again. (AU) | |
