Abstract

This project aims to analyze discourses concerning Negroes in four textbooks of History of Brazil for primary education, published in the period before the abolition of slavery: Resumo da História do Brasil (Luiz Henrique Niemeyer Bellegarde, 1834, 2nd ed.); Episódios da Historia Patria contados a infância (Joaquim Caetano Fernandes Pinheiro, 1864, 3rd ed.); Lições de História do Brasil: para uso das escolas de instrucção primaria (Joaquim Manoel de Macedo, 1875, 3rd ed.), and Pequena História do Brazil por perguntas e respostas: para uso da infância brazileira (Joaquim Maria Lacerda, 1887, 6th ed.). In order to understand the ways in which negroes are represented in this body of work, we intend to pay attention not only to the statements but also to aspects related to the production and the materiality of textbooks, trying to grasp the textual and typographical devices through which it was sought to be read and set a certain way of thinking about Negroes. The selection of texts takes into account the number of issues, the audience intended and the year of publication, privileging those that were produced in the period in which Negroes still constituted the slave workforce in Brazil. Through this project, we also aim to establish relations between the ways Negroes are treated in textbooks and discussions related to the abolition of slavery present in the House, knowing that, during the period to be surveyed, the political scene was marked by debates regarding the possibility of Negroes liberation. For this, we will also consult and review the following documents: Índice dos Annaes do Parlamento Brazileiro: Sessions from 1831 to 1892; Anais da Câmara dos Deputados; Lei de 7 de novembro de 1831 (Law Feijó); Lei nº 581, September, 4, 1850 (Law Eusébio de Queiroz); Lei nº 2.040, September, 28, 1871 (Law of the Free Womb); Lei nº 3.270, September, 28, 1885 (Law of the Sixties); Lei nº 3.353, May, 13, 1888 (Golden Law).
