Abstract

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women being ranked as the second most frequent cancer in the world. Tumor growth requires the formation of new vessels that are stimulated by vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), whose expression can be regulated by nuclear transcription factor (NF-kB). Thus, molecules involved in angiogenesis are a major target for new therapeutic agents. Melatonin, the principal hormone secreted by the pineal gland, may play an important role in tumor suppression by inhibiting angiogenesis mediated by VEGF and NF-kB. Thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of treatment with melatonin in gene and protein expression of VEGF and NF-kB in an animal model of breast cancer. Protein expression of VEGF and NF-kB will be analyzed by immunohistochemistry and quantitated by densitometry, while the gene expression will be assessed by quantitative RT-PCR. The data obtained in this study may prove the likely benefits of the use of melatonin as a therapeutic agent in the treatment of breast cancer, contributing to the control of tumor growth.
