Abstract

In this research we intend to question whether and how the Landscape Architecture Theory has been referenced by the relationship between man and landscape. We believe that this relationship may have remained implicit, secondary, even affronted, which reflects the developments of landscape's concept in the twentieth century, in which it results often deprived of an ontological dimension: at times as a cultural invention, inert material for deconstruction and resignification, at times reduced to a means of access, either subjective or objective, to Nature. This, we believe, could be at the basis of the current international debate about the relevance of Landscape Architecture as a field of knowledge and the debate on the definition of a core to the discipline. From the contributions on Landscape Theory as a field grounded in the "lived world", by authors like Eric Dardel and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, we propose an approach to the developments of the Landscape Architecture Theory in order to pursue evidence of where this original dimension of the landscape has been a reference for Landscape Architecture, helping to underpin the theoretical discourse about it.We will focus on the debate of recent decades (1970, 1980 onwards), during which phenomenology has often appeared as a declared reference or as a practical approach for Landscape Architecture, guided by a critical view of its object and its means, and by a rapprochement between the projective techniques and the effective, concrete lived spaces.
