Abstract

Phospholipids and related molecules comprise 60% of the nonaqueous portion of the brain and an even larger proportion of dendrites and synapses; they are the major constituents of membrane of neuronal and glial cells of the synaptic vesicle membrane, nuclear endoplasmic reticulum membranes of mitochondria and Golgi complex. The phospholipids are essential for all living cells and therefore changes in metabolism might influence the organism. It is known that changes in metabolism of phospholipids are involved in several neuropsychiatric disorders including Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. However, these changes appear to be distinct in each neuropsychiatric disease. Determining changes in the composition of plasma phospholipids in each of these diseases, may help to elucidate the pathophysiological mechanisms, and also in the search for candidates of specific biomarkers. For this, chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry is a good method since it provides a comprehensive profile of the substances being studied. (AU)
