Abstract

In the early fourteenth century, several civilized prelates of Castille and Portugal started developing synodal constitutions and catechisms in the vernacular, so that the parish priests and other clerics could learn not only to manage their parishes, but also to teach the most basic principles of the Church to their christian faithful. With emphasis, therefore, on the pedagogical role of these two types of prescriptive works, the objective of this work is to question to what extent the faithful fudged ignorant at that time could insert into their vocabulary, through catechesis, the expressions and religious terms to help them to naturalize practices recognized as virtuous and praiseworthy by ecclesiastical canons. More precisely, unfolding one purpose of my post-doctoral research, The rude christian in the sights of Iberian confessors, which is around the examination of the role of cathechesis and penitential confession for improving practices labeled as ignorant faithful, this project, to be developed over a period of six months abroad, seeks probe the moralizing pamphlets written by literate bishops and archibishops , in the kingdoms of Castille and Portugal between the fourteenth century and threshold of sixteenth, with the purpose of scanning teaching techniques of moral principles which were considered rudimentary at this time.
