Abstract

An increasing demand for beef in the next ten years and the consequent beef deficit, should guide scientists to perform new studies focusing on experiments that translates basic research into field application. Regarding beef cattle, important research opportunities should be more explored as feed and reproductive efficiency due to its economical and sustainable impact. The animal selection for feed efficiency is intrinsically associated with the decreased consumption of dry matter independently of the body weight gain, selecting animals that produce the same amount of beef and less greenhouse gases and manure. However, the identification of these animals is inferred late, because it demands many measurements, so this important information cannot be inserted at the commercial level. A strategy to deal with this limitation would be the identification of biomarkers associated with feed efficiency, identifying animal in advance to feedlot period, helping the lots management and diets distribution. With the advancement of studies in metabolomics, study and comprehensive analysis of metabolites, numerous physiological markers have been discovered and entered as diagnosis of diseases, metabolic, anti-doping tests and metabolic pathways understanding physiology in plants and animals. The aim of this project is to determine metabolic biomarkers associated with the phenotype of feed efficiency in biological fluids of Nellore animals and elucidate the metabolic changes involved to further develop a rapid and cost-effective test for identifying efficient animals commercially.
