Abstract

Given the increasing number of cases of American visceral leishmaniasis in the city of Araçatuba and region, and the possibility of the disease being underdiagnosed in humans, this research aims to investigate the presence of anti-L. infantum chagasi antibodies and parasite DNA in the blood, by means of real-time PCR, in patients from the Hospital SAnta Casa de Araçatuba, São Paulo, an endemic area for the disease. For this purpose, blood samples from all patients seen between the period of July to December 2015, who agree to participate in the study, or until it reaches a number of 1,200 patients evaluated, will be collected.
