Abstract

This project aims to translate the Aristophanes's plays Lysistrata and The Women Celebrating the Thesmophoria to the Brazilian dialect of South Bahia. It is part of my more daring ambition to translate the 11 plays of Greek comic playwright to Brazilian dialects. The project emerged from the finding that we need translations which take into account Brazilian Portuguese, spoken by the majority of the population in the various contexts of social interaction. In translation, will be taken into consideration speaking situations, the social status of characters in the plays, the subjects and the communicative purposes of the wordings. Based on a strong theoretical background, I conceive translation as linguistic recreation. Therefore, I will try to recreate the plays in question, reproducing the linguistic diversity and the style of Aristophanes's texts. If successful, the project will contribute to Classical Studies as well as to studies in linguistic variation and dialectology of Portuguese language. On top of that, the theoretical and methodological choices of the project aim not only to overcome the challenges of translation as a linguistic recreation, but also to make easier the staging of the plays, fostering the Theater of USP (TUSP) and other Brazilian theaters with new options of staging of Aristophanes's comedies. Indeed, the staging of the plays, is a part of my strategy to disseminate the results of the project. In this regard, I will try, from the beginning, to cooperate with TUSP and other theaters in São Paulo City, such as, for example, theater of SESI. The project will start in May 2015 and will be concluded in May 2017. It foresees the translation of one play per year. At the end of each year, I will try to bring out the plays with comments and notes which will make easier the reading.
