Abstract

Lanthanide complexes calls attention of scientific community as an alternative to the expensive iridium (III) complexes used in OLEDs fabrication. These rare earth complexes exhibit excellent emission properties and monochromaticity. Lanthanide ions are good emitters, but have low molar absorption due to its f-f forbidden transition by Laporte selection rule. An alternative used to overcome this deficit is the use of organic ligand with high molar absorption and then transfer its energy efficiently to the lanthanide ions in the so called 'antenna effect'. Lanthanide (III) ions are considered hard acids, by Pearson definition, and then they form stable complexes with hard Lewis bases. Among all different classes of ligands known, carboxylic acids call attention due its chemical and thermal stability, and high triplet energy. Thermal stability is important in the deposition of active layers in OLEDs, and high triplet energy can sensitize several lanthanide ions. So being, in this work we propose the synthesis and characterization of complexes of lanthanides (Eu3+, Tb3+ and Gd3+) with carboxylic acids ligands to use in OLED displays. It is worth to highlight that for the best of our knowledge the proposed complexes are novel structures so far.
