Abstract

The Cretaceous deposits from the Araripe Basin record the opening of the Atlantic Ocean and the earliest marine incursions in the northeastern Brazil following the Gondwana fragmentation. Although recording important chapter of the Earth's history, the Araripe Basin has been studied more often paleontologically - mainly taxonomically - due to the high quality of fossil preservation. The earliest episodes of marine ingression are recorded in the Aptian-Albian shell-bed deposits in the top of the Romualdo Member of the Santana Formation, which preserve undoubtedly marine taxa. However, the direction of the marine incursion is still an enigma. Available proposes present distinct seaways linking the so-formed Atlantic Ocean and the NE Brazilian basins (Parnaíba, Potiguar, Sergipe-Alagoas and Recôncavo-Tucano). Defining the direction of the marine ingression is crucial to understand the paleobiogeography and to establish a stratigraphic correlation during the Aptian-Albian interval in the inner NE Brazil. In such context, this project proposes the detailed taphonomic study of the many shell-beds - at least 25 - of the Araripe Basin (Romualdo Member, Santana Formation). The main aim is to construct a scenario on the assemblage genesis as well as the depositional tract of the Santana Formation, in order to define the direction of the marine ingression in the Araripe Basin during the Albian-Aptian.
