Abstract

Polysomnographic studies involving subjects with schizophrenia have reported the continuity of sleep disturbances, decreased slow-wave sleep, a reduction in the latency of REM sleep, increased the percentage of REM sleep and reducing the amount of NREM sleep in minutes. As for the polysomnographic findings in TB, the main feature seems to be the reduction of total sleep time. The atypical antipsychotic class of drugs with established efficacy in the treatment of schizophrenia and TB significantly increase total sleep time and stage 2 in particular. But usually persists even in sleep changes during treatment. Different sources of evidence have suggested that abnormalities in neuroplasticity play an important role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia and TB. Interestingly, recent studies have demonstrated a role of sleep on cognition and brain neuroplasticity. Studies addressing sleep in schizophrenia and TB are rare and the results often subject to bias arising from the use of various medications, comorbidities or stages of the disease. To our knowledge, there are no studies evaluating whether changes in sleep or sleep-wake cycle could predict the development of psychosis and TB in individuals with EMR. (AU)
