Abstract

The conflicts related to water are inherent to cities development and actually, stand out under a water crisis scenario. New urban management models and planning oriented for hydrological cycle suggests that harmonious relations amongst occupation process and the interventions in ecosystems can arise, taking advantage efficiently of the environment natural characteristics. The Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD), emerged under this premise, in order to meet the demands in the Australian context. Currently, the use of the practices following this approach increased, forming a set of experiences that can guide the spread of WSUD to other realities, such as the reality of Brazilian cities. This research proposes to study WSUD in its original context, as well as look for an understanding about the models, related to hydrological cycle, adopted by the urban planners in São Carlos (São Paulo State), in order to comprehend the challenges and potentials for the development of this approach in the context of this city.
