Behavior of the muscle strength in people with COPD submitted to resistance training with elastic tubing

Abstract

COPD is a major chronic respiratory disease and is estimated to be the third leading cause of disability and death worldwide by 2030. It is known that resistance exercise is an effective conduct in rehabilitation process of these patients because it promotes improvement in muscle strength, reflecting on quality life. Resistance training is gaining evidence and elastic tubing, an alternative training tool, is noted for their low cost, portability and use little space to get muscle strength. However, studies with elastic resistance need to be clarify. Objective: To compare the behavior of the muscle strenght between a resistance periodized training with elastic tubing and a resistance training with weight machines in subjects with COPD. Methods: Patients with COPD will be divided into two groups, one perform resistance periodized training with elastic tubing (GR1) and the other with weight machines (GR2). Will be assessed the muscle strength (dynamometer and maximum repetitions) and pulmonary function (spirometry). After the initial assessment, GR1 and GR2 groups will undergo training programs for 12 weeks with 3 sessions per week, lasting 60 minutes each, totalizing 36 sessions. Statistical analysis: Data analysis will be performed using SPSS- version 22.0 (SPSS Inc.,Chicago,IL, USA). The normal distribution of the data will be assessed by the Shapiro-Wilk test. The comparison of muscle strenght baseline, 6 weeks and 12 weeks after resistance training will be analyzed by the technique of analysis of variance for repeated measures model in independent groups, with additional multiple comparison test of Bonferroni or Dunn as the adherence of the data to a Gaussian distribution. For comparison of baseline and 12 weeks between the groups will perform t student test in normal distribution and Mann Whitney in non- normally data. The final data are expressed as mean, with standard deviation, median and interquartile interval (25-75%). The level of significance is p <0.05.
