Abstract

Considerable research is being directed towards developing biodegradable polymeric magnetic nanoparticles for drug delivery, in view of their applications in controlling the release of drugs, stabilizing labile molecules (e.g., proteins, peptides, or DNA) from degradation, and site-specific drug targeting, stimulated by external magnetic field (EMF). Biopolymers are interesting materials due to biocompatibility, low toxicity and biodegradability. This research project aims to developed novel composites of different polysaccharides (alginate, hydroxypropyl-methyl-cellulose and xanthan) and magnetite nanoparticles for biotechnology applications in the absence and in the presence of EMF. The composites will be prepared as beads and membranes; they will be characterized in terms of morphology, mechanical, thermal, magnetic and surface properties. Dopamine and bradykinin will be used as drugs for the controlled drug release demonstration in the absence and in the presence of EMF. The ability of dopamine or bradykinin loaded hybrid materials to stimulate the differentiation of neuronal cells to dopaminergic neurons will be investigated.
