Abstract

The following research project has the objective to put into question the political clashes related to the professional regulation of the architects in Brazil, made official by the Federal Decree n.23569/1933. The analysis aiming to map and comprehend these clashes will be made by the inspection of the debates of specialized magazines and parliamentary discussions; of the role of this conflict in the stimulus to the formation of professional associations and in the formulation of recurring themes of conferences and events of the architecture area, investigated through theses defended in the Pan-American Congress of Architects. By the analysis of the performative dimension of texts and documents, putting into evidence the political clashes, it is attempted to understand in what ways the architects positioned themselves with political games concerning the professional field linked to buildings construction and in Government relations, trying to legitimize and define their profession and position of social and political prestige, mainly in the decades of 1920 and 1930. The hypotheses of this study are defined by the perception of two tension foci between these professionals and the public authorities in the delimitation of this new field of knowledge: the oscillation between the technical side and the artistic one in the formation and agency of architects, as well as in the definition of discipline; and the paradox among the defense of the liberal aspect of the profession and the constant pressures to a greater control of the State as a guarantee of its enforcement. Therefore, through these aspects elicited, it is intended to investigate and clarify the mutual implications of these disputes for social and political legitimization of the architects and the architecture`s place in Brazil during the first decades of the republic.
