Abstract

Population dynamics is among the main parameters used to evaluate the fishing-effort effects over targeted species, as over those composing the bycatch. This study is unprecedented to investigate in large scale the population dynamics of the shrimp Rimapenaeus constrictus, in its both spatial and temporal aspects, once this species is largely exploited as bycatch at Western Atlantic. Therefore, R. constrictus' population parameters will be analyzed, such as sex ratio, average size of individuals and size at onset of sexual maturity, condition factor (fattening degree), gonadossomatic index, growth, longevity, and periods and sites where juvenile recruitment would be taking place. Samples were performed monthly at the northern portion of São Paulo State's littoral area, from January 1998 to June 2003, using a shrimp-fishing boat outfitted with double-rig nets. Four quarterly samples will be performed at the Ubatuba coastal area throughout 2015, to obtain sufficient data to analyze the condition factor and gonadossomatic index. Individuals are going to be classified to its sex, measured to its carapace length (CL) and grouped into demographic classes according to its morphological and gonadal development. Female bodies (FW) and its dissected gonads (GW) are going to be weighed using an analytical balance in order to determinate its gonadossomatic index (GSI), which is given by "GSI=(GW/FW)*100". Using suitable statistical analyses for each goal, it is proposed to describe the population structure and to determinate the intensity from which each environmental factor influences the growth pattern and reproductive dynamics of R. constrictus. This study will provide valuable information which will contribute to the large scale knowledge concerning R. constrictus' biology and, added to the current studies carried out for other species of Penaeoidea, can be used for developing strategies which minimizes the non-selective exploitation of profitable and non-profitable resources which presents distinctive population features.
