Muscle pain and voice related quality of life in dysphonic individuals

Abstract

When the voice do not performs any of its functions correctly, we have a condition named dysphonia. Some types of dysphonia, usually caused by a vocal disorder, may have signs that go beyond font and filter, expressing body discomfort, mainly in cervical and scapular areas. Considering the vocal, larynx and body symptoms, we can conclude dysphonia conceives an impact that goes further than vocal alterations, reaching effects in the individual quality of life. Due to the absence of studies carried out which associate the frequency and intensity of the muscle skeletal pain within the quality of life in dysphonic patients, we can verify the necessity of a better understanding about the influence of the muscle skeletal pain in the individual quality of life, looking for helping the clinic, giving scientific evidences to better direct the therapy in the vocal disorders. Purpose: Characterize and analyze the relationship between frequency and intensity of the muscle skeletal pain in the quality of life in dysphonic and non-disphonic people. Methodology: A transverse, observing, random and retrospective study wil be done. To compose the dysphonic group (DG), individuals will be studied, both male and female, between the ages 18 and 45 who had gone to Setor de Voz da Clínica-Escola de Fonoaudiologia da FOB/USP in the period from January, 01, 2013 to November, 30, 2015, and that have been diagnosed with functional or organic-functional dysphonia. To compose the non-dysphonic group (NDG), will be selected patients who do not report vocal complaints, with no dysphonic history and balanced-voice classified by a speech-language pathology selection. Patients of the NDG will be levelled with members of the DG according to the number of subjects, age, and sex. For the following research, will be used the protocols of "Voice-Related Quality of Life Measure (V-RQOL)" and the "Questionaire of Investigation of Muscle Skeletal Pain". Also, will be collected identification, health, and vocal information and types of dysphonia. The data will be organized and submitted to statistic descriptive analysis of the V-RQOL information and frequency and intensity of muscle skeletal pain. As well, a correlation between the V-RQOL information and frequency and intensity of muscle skeletal pain will be carried out, as a test being selected after histogram analysis and, option for parametric or nonparametric tests, considering a significance of 5%. The results will be compared with the literature available.
