Abstract

Atherosclerosis is a complex and multifactorial disease that consists in a chronicinflammation of the artery wall. Lowering LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) is the primary clinicalapproach to prevent cardiovascular events, which is often achieved by statin treatment.However, even patients treated with statins have a considerable residual burden ofcardiovascular risk. Increasing attention has focused on HDL-C raising as acardioprotective measure, although it has become clear that HDL parameters in serumdo not always reflect HDL function. Once HDL loss of function is attributed to oxidativemodification of HDL particle components and to lipid composition and properties, theobjective of the present proposal is to evaluate whether a combined bioactivesupplementation of omega-3 fatty acids, phytosterols and polyphenols from green teawould impact HDL functionality in statin-treated patients.
