Abstract

Body dysmorphic disorder(BDD) is defined according to the DSM-IV as an excessive and pathologic preoccupation with minimal or no appearance defects. BBD differs from normal concerns when these lead to significant disability of the individual, reducing his quality of life, distancing him from his daily activities and occupying much of his time. The relevance to understand with clarity the TDC is the fact that it remains underdiagnosed, although the psychosocial aspects of the disease have gained importance in recent decades. The central role of appearance coming from the media and the development of more accessible cosmiatric procedures and results are best examples. Therefore, health professionals need to be alert to perform the diagnostic suspicion of BDD more accurately and more frequently. The multifactorial aspects that lead to the development of the disease are not totally clear yet. Therefore, it is necessary to identify which variables act as risk factors for the BDD. The objective of this study is to combine clinical and demographic data to BBD in order to draw a dermatological patient profile to raise the diagnostic suspicion of this disorder.A cross-sectional study will be conducted to assess the prevalence of BDD among dermatological patients of FMB-UNESP, and to identify characteristics of these patients, comparing them with controls of other clinics.
