Abstract

This project for the Research Internship Abroad Program (BEPE-FAPESP) is planned to be carried out at the Faculty of Humanities at the VU University Amsterdam, under the co-supervision of Dra. Susan Legêne. The proposal is linked to my PhD fellowship in Brazil (process number: 2014/25152-0), "The photography of Ricardo Rangel: experience, memory, and colonialism in Mozambique", conducted in the Graduate Program in Social Anthropology at Universidade de São Paulo. The purpose of my doctoral research is to analyze the photographic production of the Mozambican photojournalist Ricardo Rangel, between 1950 and 1975. The axes of this analysis are the Rangel's anticolonial activism (both in his trajectory and in his photographs), the inventiveness in the practice of photojournalism, and the memoir aspects present in his work. The main objectives of the internship abroad is to acquire knowledge and experience in the various possible aspects of memory, visual sources, and colonial history, axes that are crucial to my research. Thus, this period would provide an increase especially on three points: a) systematization and discussions on recent publications on the relationship among photograph, colonialism, history, and memory; b) furthering my theoretical and methodological knowledge through exchanges with other researchers, as well the participation in seminars and research projects focused on my subject; c) to get in touch with research sources which could help to strengthen reflective and empirical aspects of my PhD.
