Abstract

This research aims to analyses the effects of meaning produced by the short story "Na arca" by Machado de Assis, in different publishing media in which it was initially published: the newspaper O Cruzeiro in May 1878 and the book Papéis Avulsos, organized by the author in 1882. Thus, besides the intrinsic analysis of the text, this research will give prominence to the concepts of discursive ambience and editorial mediation, considering the broader assumption that examine the manner in which the different spaces publication of a written participate of the significance produced for it. On a larger key, therefore, proposes to establish connections, even if briefly, between elements from the Machado studies, literary theory and history of the press and the book in Brazil from the said short story and its history of propagation.
