Abstract

We propose here a study of how audiovisual language has been appropriated by women of different xinguan peoples through workshops offered by Catitu Institute. We seek to understand how in xinguan context occurs the meeting between particular aesthetic conventions - connected to a specific ontology - and the appropriation of audiovisual language. To what extent does this particular way of seeing and showing - related to a particular way of thinking - transports itself to audiovisual productions: how much of it is transformed and in what ways is it updated? From the relationship between art and agency - widely attested in the so called "indigenous art" - we seek to understand what effects are generated by the audiovisual production of these women and what changes it may cause among their political protagonism and among xinguan sociality in general. Imbricated in the inquiry of such effects is the contrast between the positions held by men and those held by women in xinguan society - contrast that seems to replicate itself among their respective forms of appropriating audiovisual media.
