Abstract

Objective: To identify whether adults engaged in sports during early life, when compared to their sedentary peers in the same period, they have better indicators of bone density and lower health care expenditures over the 12-month follow-up. Methods: According to the sample size calculation, should participate in the cohort of 12 months, at least 161 adults aged between 40 and 65 years of both sexes and residents in the city of Presidente Prudente. Therefore, the cohort will start with at least 193 participants (providing you show losses of 20%). All these evaluations described below will be held in two stages of the study. Initially, participants will undergo an initial assessment for the collection of personal and anthropometric data. Respond to questionnaires about musculoskeletal symptoms and the habit of practicing physical activities. Following will receive pedometers for individual assessment of daily physical activity (seven days) and will be assessed for bone mass with equipment X-ray absorptiometry Dual Energy (DEXA) to investigate data segmented into different regions of the skeleton. Expected Results: The possible implications of our findings are particularly important for identifying potentially important in the prevention of bone loss in adulthood sports, which should be considered by pediatricians and physical educators seeking a better bone health in youth and adulthood. Likewise, these findings may identify relatively inexpensive strategies for preventing severe loss of bone mass observed among naturally menopausal women. Finally, our findings can identify the weight that bone loss can cause spending on health as well as to estimate the amount that could be saved by the simple practice of sports in youth.
