Abstract

The available surfactants are synthesized from oil derivatives as linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS). These anionic surfactants have toxic characteristics in relation to the environment, needing bigger control over it. The study on degradation of laundry wastewater is a theme of great challenge, seen that the intense growth in population in developing countries as Brazil is not followed by infrastructure, specially the ones in basic sanitation. Moreover, the laundry wastewater contain elevated LAS levels, that when discarded directly inside domestic waste network or wastewater network, can cause serious problems, such as foaming and the inhibition of indigenous microorganisms. By utilizing technologies water treatment, it's possible to remove the anaerobic degradation of the surfactants on laundry wastewater, which justifies the relevancy of this study, in an attempt to better adequate environmentally these effluents. The project has as an aim to monitor the efficiency of the organic matter and LAS surfactant removal from the anaerobic fluidized bed reactor at enlarged scale (19 L) with expanded clay (cinasita) as support material, being continually fed with laundry wastewater.
