Abstract

The problems of plant toxicity to cadmium (Cd) have been increasing every year, however the range of species that have some degree of tolerance to this metal is extremely limited. Cd is a heavy metal, which is harmful to human and animal health as well as to agriculture, impairing yield and quality of edible portion of plants. In this context, the discovery of tomato accessions tolerant to this metal is a relevant issue, since the knowledge of mechanisms that support it can be used in crop managing and plant breeding programs. For this purpose, tomato accessions with different levels of tolerance to Cd are being evaluated through anatomical, physiological and biochemical analysis. In 2016, the intention is to perform molecular analysis in order to complement the results already obtained or those ones that will be gotten until the moment of the internship. Therefore, we propose a partnership with Prof. Ann Cuypers (Hasselt University, Belgium), who is a reference for researchers that study the effects of heavy metals on plants. We have chosen Prof. Ann Cuypers's research group for their relevant works using multidisciplinary approaches (physiological, biochemical and specially genomic evaluations) to discover mechanisms of plant adaptation to Cd, resulting in papers that have been published in high impact scientific journals. This project is relevant because it will deepen our understanding about plant tolerance to Cd, and this information can be used to maintain or even improve plant productivity under heavy metal stress, also reducing risks related to introduction of Cd into food chain.
