Pain and distress in inpatient children in a pediatric intensive care unit

Abstract

Objective: To assess the intensity of acute pain and stress behavior in children in preschool, hospitalized in the pediatric intensive care unit, comparing different groups by the type of treatment and stage of development of children. Method: Cross-sectional study. The study sample will consist of 50 preschool children, aged two and six years who are admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital of Clinics of Ribeirão Preto Medical School-USP. The sample will meet the following groups: a) two groups with homogeneous characteristics, being a child in the postoperative treatment and another of children with clinical treatment in progress; b) two groups of different age groups, being a 2-3 years and another 4-6 years. For assessment of pain indicators will be use: The COMFORT Scale applied by medical staff to obtain the pain indicators in a intensive care context, and the FLACC scale (Face, Legs, Activity, Cry and Consolability) applied specifically for two painful puncture procedures. The assessment of distress indicators will be carried out through the distress scale OSBD-R (Observational Scale of Behavioral Distress-Revised) for scores of the children's distress symptoms. To obtain the indicators about the history of environmental distress and pain procedures will apply the NISS Scale adapted to the context of pediatric intensive care unit. Data analysis: A descriptive analysis in terms of mean and standard deviation for numeric variables and frequencies and percentages for categorical variables will be done. Then it will use the Pearson correlation test for the association analysis between two continuous variables. The comparison between two independent groups will be processed through the Student t test. The significance level of 5% (p d 0.05) will be adopted in all study tests. (AU)
