Abstract

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a preventable and treatable disease, characterized by progressive airflow obstruction that is not fully reversible, due to abnormal inflammatory response to inhalation of noxious particles or toxic gases, especially cigarette smoking. The assessment of the severity of the degree of obstruction of the disease is part of the treatment approach, as the frequency of exacerbations and the magnitude of dyspnea rating that comprise the gravity. These conditions relegate affected patients to specific treatments, the oxygen being a non pharmacological treatment of great importance. Studies provide data about the survival of patients with very severe COPD treated with ODP. In this way, the aim is to assess mortality rates and associated factors in the follow up of patients with COPD in five years. It is a retrospective longitudinal study in which such patients were followed in the Hospital Services of the Faculty of Medicine of Botucatu - UNESP.
