Abstract

This research project aims to investigate the manifestations of nature, tiny as they can be, in heavily artificialized environments. It will focus on the residual spaces of the urban fabric in their various contexts and scales: from almost imperceptible cracks spontaneously populated by ruderal vegetation, to extensive idle land or remnants of interventions in the streets or channeled streams.Once left to chance, two spaces are present in a state of abandon that provides not only a wide range of plant species, as well uses, appreciations and eruptions of imaginary contents. In other words, they give rise the becoming of landscapes where it seems most unlikely. The research is supported by the assumption that landscapes, to be instituted, require the opening of a horizon, real or metaphorical, that the situations to be studied seem to favor. Its general objective is to probe the landscaped potential of forgotten spaces, where nature is expressed obliquely, but insistently. The empirical field corresponds to the areas of hard topography and relatively recent urbanization located between the valley of Tiete river and Serra da Cantareira, in São Paulo. Such research requires a theoretical basis which will be sought, at first, in the Manifest of the Third Landscape, by Gilles Clément, and fueled by bibliography on landscape and poetic imagination. References to its historical rejection are essential, too, which justifies go back to the earliest records of attempted repression of spontaneous manifestations of nature in the São Paulo urban areas. It is expected that the systematization of the results will contribute to the ways of designing, intervening, managing and enjoying the scenery in the public space. (AU)
