Abstract

Cancer cachexia is a multifactorial syndrome characterized by severe weight loss accompanied by large metabolic imbalance. Although the aetiology of cachexia is unknown, it is believed that it is a result of the interaction between the host's cells and the tumour, which induces systemic inflammation. Understanding the relationship between, inflammation and tumour microenvironment is required for the discovery of markers and treatment of the syndrome. The aim of the present study was to establish the profile of immune cells infiltrating the tumor and the pattern of cytokine secretion in cachectic patients with cachexia or not the same place, diagnosis and tumor staging. Besides, proteomic analysis of these tumors and saliva of patients, aiming at identifying the factors that may be related to the cancer's ability to induce the syndrome. Use of saliva in the molecular processes is very important because it is a simple fluid collection and at not being a non-invasive procedure, the detection of biomarkers that are identified both in the tumors and biological fluid can be a effective clinical tool for the diagnosis.
