Abstract

The prevalence of obesity and overweight has increased in developing countries and in Brazil reaches alarming rates. Understanding how this process takes place and seek alternatives to limit the damage caused by the diseases associated with it, such as DM2, hypertension and dyslipidemia, are of paramount importance to public health. In obesity there is an increase in the lamellar layer of subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue (AT) triggering an inflammatory process with increased cytokine expression and development of peripheral insulin resistance (IR). The distribution pattern of the AT has been considered more important for determining the degree of obesity, than the percentage of total body fat. Thus, the study of the various types of TA is needed, since they have different characteristics, with different lipogenic capacity, production and hormonal processing patterns. The thyroid hormone (TH) acts on lipid and glucose metabolism, and has the AT as an important target. Furthermore, studies have shown that the TSH acts on 3T3-L1 adipose cells increasing the expression of IL-6 and TNF-alpha cytokines, which are related to IR observed in obesity states. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the effect of TH on the expression of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines, as well as the TSH receptor, in subcutaneous and periepididymal AT of rats made obese by cafeteria diet feeding.
