Abstract

Obesity is a risk factor for developing chronic diseases that cause high mortality in the world. One way to measure the degree of obesity is through adiposity indicators, such as skinfold thickness of triceps and calf, waist circumference and the sum of skinfolds (subscapular, iliac above, calf and triceps). During sexual maturation, these indicators begin to protrude, in a way to question if a physiological and natural process (such as sexual maturation) can give rise to a mortality risk (such as obesity). Objective: To analyze the influence of sexual maturation status on body fat indicators in children and adolescents aged 7 to 14 years of Florianópolis, SC, Brazil. Methods: The study was based on a database collected in 2007 in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil, with boys and girls 7-14 years old. Sexual maturation was evaluated according to criteria of Tanner and adiposity indices (skinfold thickness and waist circumference) assessed by caliper and cirtometry. Quantitative variables were expressed as measures of central tendency and dispersion according to the normality of the data, which will be evaluated by the Shapiro-Wilk test. The qualitative variables were described by absolute and relative frequency, and analyzed using the chi-square test. The significance level was 95%. Analyses were performed using Stata 11.0.
