Abstract

This project aims at analyzing the approaches to the concept of valence in university-level general chemistry textbooks published in the USA along the first decades of the twentieth century. A historical case study about the development of the concept of valence from the late nineteenth through the early twentieth century will be made, followed by investigation of the presence of the concept in textbooks. The project is guided by the following research questions: How the concept of valence was approached in textbooks over time? Do textbooks present the development of the concept of valence? How the changes in the concept are presented? The methodology of analysis will be qualitative, following the steps suggested by discursive textual analysis. By comparing different periods and authors, changes in the way the concept of valence was approached and in the relevance assigned to it for the training of new scientists and chemistry professionals throughout the twentieth century are expected to be observed.
